Help for New Arrivals
Temporary Housing and Airport Pick-ups
Few things are more scary than arriving at an airport in a foreign country where no friends or family are there to pick you up. Often, you have to arrange your own housing in this strange new place too. That is why we arrange this service for Chinese students and scholars arriving in the Minneapolis / St. Paul area to study at the University of Minnesota for the first time.
If you are a newcomer, we can arrange for someone to pick you up at the airport. We can also usually arrange temporary housing for a day until a week in a friendly American's home while you find a regular place to rent and move into. This is free as an act of friendship.
To arrange these services, go to www.new2umn.org.
Finding and Moving Used Furniture
Most of the apartments near the University of Minnesota have no furniture in them at all. In this area, new furniture is very expensive but used furniture is very cheap. Once you find an apartment, click here for a list of stores in PDF format at which to find used furniture. (Updated 8/09)
Furniture is usually too large to transport with a car. We have several people with vans who can help newcomers look for used furniture and then help move it. For help with this contact Tom Lindstrom at
.
Used Bikes for Newcomers
Bicycles are practical transportation for around the campus. If you are a newcomer, contact Tom Lindstrom at . He will let you know if he can help you in getting a used bicycle and a bicycle lock.
Housing Links
It is helpful to get information about particular places that are available for rent even BEFORE you arrive here. Websites where you can get the most information about available apartments and rooms for rent near the University are the Friendship Association of Chinese Students and Scholars?BBS at
www.facssumn.com/forum/default.asp, a general list of some places that rent at www.tc.umn.edu/~facss/offcampus/living.htm, the University's housing office at here,
and the classified ads section of the University’s campus newspaper at www.mndaily.com.
